Assistant Director of Community Engagement

Under the direction of the Director of Public Policy and Community Engagement, the Assistant Director of Community Engagement is responsible for building community relationships, identifying and developing local leadership and integrating program and policy work within the agency. The AD manages external community engagement and organizing opportunities which includes the development of new advocacy campaigns and the coordination of staff, scheduling, attending events, reporting and follow-up. By developing new and enhancing existing community partnerships and provider relationships, this position enables IAFC and it’s advocacy partners to move forward a campaign to create a sustainable and equitable early childhood system. All work to be completed with minimum supervision and in accordance with organization standards.

  • Develop new and enhance existing partnerships with individuals and organizations in high need communities in Illinois to advance IAFC’s mission.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that move IAFC’s long term policy vision forward, strengthen our base, build skill and capacity of member organizations, and empower impacted communities.
  • Participate at a leadership level in policy design, campaign strategy and messaging.
  • Oversee and conduct outreach to parents, providers and other potential leaders in targeted communities to learn about their concerns and to develop working relationships.
  • Engage members in advocacy including in-district meetings with legislators; speaking to media and at press conferences, rallies, town halls and hearings; writing op-eds and letters to the editor, social media and action alerts; and assisting with lobby days.
  • Oversee advocacy and community education efforts of IAFC Community Partners.
  • Travel to identified regions to engage IAFC members, build relationships around common interests, and execute and participate in events.
  • Manage and develop member leadership including leaders at a variety of engagement levels (core, supporters, followers, etc) and with a variety of advocacy styles (direct action, influencing decision makers, raising public awareness etc.)
  • Manage Providers in Action group, and provide support to other advocacy collaborations throughout the state
  • Coordinate staff training across IAFC departments to ensure that PPA and IDHS priorities are understood by all staff that work with community residents.
  • Develop process to recruit, assign, direct and coordinate staff participation in external events. Manage member database and list through Salesforce – a customer relationships management system.
  • Collaborate with other department supervisors and directors to coordinate and manage PPA’s internal agency collaboration efforts to ensure PPA priorities are understood by all agency direct service staff
  • Manage and ensure completion of program data and financial reports as required by contract, research and agency reporting needs.
  • Assist Director of Policy in grants and foundation communications (reports, proposals)
  • Work closely with External Relations department in the development of community education resources and materials for parents, providers and communities
  • Manage Community Engagement Associate(s) staff and support their professional development

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEBachelor's degree and at least five years community organizing experience. Bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred.

SALARY: $53,900 yr./minimum
