Job Description Summary

The Service Engineering Manager is responsible for creation and execution of the 1-5 year strategic service engineering plan and the growth and development of the technical and professional abilities of the service staff. The S.E. Manger is a change agent that is constantly challenging the status quo and implementing new initiatives to achieve the plan objectives.  The S.E. Manager is the professional liaison between OEMs, distributors, and other customers in the communication of issue resolution and planning of corrective actions.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and execute the strategic 1-5 year plan for the Service Department including project plans, budgeting, and technology advancements
  • Create and analyze internal department metrics that guide and support the strategic plan
  • Consult with OEM, distributors, and upper management on quality issues and give directions to the service team
  • Establish and grow APQP QA/QC initiatives that focus on locally procured parts
  • Apply analysis principles and develop company policies regarding warranty coverage
  • Strive to discover innovative ideas that will result in incremental or dramatic improvement to warranty expense, department operation and staff engagement; commitment to continual improvement in all areas of responsibilities
  • Prepare quality reports, track, and maintain answers for reports including interfacing with KBT
  • Establish work procedures and processes that support company and departmental standards, procedures, and strategic directives
  • Lead with emotional intelligence, understands communication style differences and leverages abilities to create and maintain a fully engaged staff
  • Able to identify areas of staff and department improvement and make recommend actions
  • Responsible for staffing, planning, assigning, directing work, conducting performance appraisals, coaching and development of team, employee issue resolution and discipline
  • Create and maintain a high quality work environment so staff is motivated to perform at their highest level
  • Develop and maintain a team mentality and direction within the department that is customer focused
  • Communicate, organize, and maintain confidential information and material
  • Follow safety guidelines and department and corporate policies and procedures

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the engineering and mechanics involved in the installation and operation of diesel and gasoline engines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to resolve conflicts, develop appropriate solutions to problems, and develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with customers and co-workers
  • Ability to multi-task, establish priorities and meet deadlines, maintain a flexible attitude and approach towards assignments, and maintain level of organization in a changing and fast paced environment
  • Strong problem solving and discernment skills for various decisions such as addressing highly complex customer issues. Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to develop and recommend strategic plans, annual budgets, and technology improvements

  • Ability to travel approximately 35% of the time mostly overnight,  possibly with last minute notice; travel internationally

 

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 5-8 years management experience preferred or 8+ years management experience in a similar positon
  • 10+ years experience in gasoline and/or diesel engine diagnostics and repair
  • 2-5 years experience/exposure to Final Tier 4 engine emissions technology and operation

 

Physical Demands

  • Sitting for long periods of time with some walking, stooping, bending, and reaching
  • Frequent pushing and pulling of objects
  • Dexterity to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists
  • Movement by holding, turning, and grasping of objects
  • Reaching by extending hands in any direction
  • Feeling temperature, shape, or texture by means of senses in skin
  • Ability to drive a car and travel by air for extended periods of time
  • Regular lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to hear normal conversations on phone or in person
  • Ability to see more than 20 feet
  • Ability to see color and see/read computer screen

 

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in an office environment. Noise level is moderate
  • Exposure to engine testing labs. Noise level ranges from moderate to very loud
  • Exposure to the warehouse. Limited exposure to temperature variations when shipping doors are open
  • Regular exposure to vibration, fumes, gases, and proximity to moving mechanical parts
  • Handling of potentially dangerous chemicals or other substances, dangerous equipment, and tools
  • Work produced is subject to precise measures of quality and quantity
  • While traveling, will experience noise and comfort levels common to automobiles and airplanes

 

Tools and Equipment

  • Computer and other general office equipment
  • Eye and ear protection required while working on engines
  • Steel toed shoes are required at times
