Job Description

The newest campus of the University of Chicago Charter School opened in autumn 2008 as a middle school, named for one of the University’s first African American graduates, Carter G. Woodson.

The Carter G. Woodson campus of the University of Chicago Charter School serves grades six through eight in a Chicago Public Schools facility at 4444 S. Evans Ave. It is located in Bronzeville next to an existing Chicago public school, the Carter G. Woodson Elementary School, which serves sixth through eighth grade students.

Position Summary:

The RTI Coordinator will be responsible for improving educational outcomes for all students as measured by STEP and NWEA assessments. 

Functions, Duties, Responsibilities:

  • Lead school’s RTI team
  • Coordinate overall RTI/School Improvement Plan
  • Carry out needed research and study to gain full working knowledge of RTI
  • Research and identify appropriate curriculum based measurement tools to provide frequent monitoring of students’ progress
  • Guide process for purchase of additional intervention materials
  • Identify evidence-based instructional programs which may be adopted by the campus to improve instructional methods in classrooms where needed
  • Monitor general classroom instruction to ensure use of sound teaching practices consisting of evidence-based instructional practices which are implemented with fidelity
  • Promote the use of research based interventions in Tier II and Tier III
  • Plan and deliver ongoing staff development for teachers, instructional assistants (IAs), and RTI specialists with respect to RTI
  • Train all IAs and RTI specialists on providing Tier II supports to small groups
  • Deliver Tier III supports to individual students
  • Monitor implementation of RTI groups
  • Monitor implementation of differentiated math groups
  • Observe and provide regular feedback on all Tier II and Tier III supports
  • Collect and analyze student data (including STEP and NWEA assessment results)
  • Oversees data collection and progress monitoring at every tier
  • Use data to help interventionists plan small and individual group lessons
  • Use coaching tools effectively (quality indicators, videos, modeling, etc)
  • Support teachers and interventionists in documenting student progress
  • Work with classroom teachers, campus director, and special education team to facilitate eligibility for special education
  • Review, process, and monitor all RTI/special education referrals
  • Serve as consultant to special education and all staff in the implementation of research based practices
  • Deliver professional development to staff on RTI


  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in early childhood, elementary education, reading and/or math, special education, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of three years experience teaching regular or special education
  • Knowledge of research related to Response to Intervention
  • Understanding of scientifically based reading research, reading development, and developmentally appropriate instruction for children
  • Leadership experience, organizational skills, and communication abilities to effectively coach and support teachers and their instructional teams
